We don’t have too long to wait.
The Volkswagen Amarok is one of those cool products that we in America don’t get the chance to experience, but for the new generation arriving as a 2023 model, that’s not such a bad thing. Why? Because the next Amarok will be based on a Blue Oval product, the upcoming 2023 Ford Ranger, which we do have access to. Of course, things could change if there’s enough demand for the pickup here in the US, and based on the responses to the first images of the vehicle, it seems that plenty of Americans like it. We’ll have a clearer idea of whether it’ll be a success here once we see what it’s like, but when will that be? According to Volkswagen Australia, it’s very soon.

The Australasian division of the German automaker says that the full reveal will take place on 7 July 2022. So far, not very much has been revealed about this new pickup, but we do know that one engine will run on gasoline while up to four others will be diesel-powered, with the spread of these engines differing for each market. The diesel engines will be available in capacities ranging from 2.0 to 3.0 liters and will feature four or six cylinders. Naturally, power will be directed to either the rear axle or both, and in time, it’s expected that electric versions of both the Amarok and the Ford Ranger will follow.

We also know that Ford will not allow Volkswagen access to its Ranger Raptor; if VW wants a hardcore, off-road-focused Amarok, it’ll have to develop it on its own steam. According to rumors, Volkswagen did approach Ford on numerous occasions with a view to sharing its knowledge on such a vehicle, but Ford Performance innovations were not part of the deal that the Blue Oval and the German automaker discussed and agreed to. Nevertheless, Volkswagen has more than enough resources to develop such a thing if it wishes, but we doubt it will spend the money when electrification is imminent.
