Tesla should be worried about Sweden’s upcoming EV.
Polestar 1 production was limited to just 1,500 models, which means the only car you can currently buy from the Swedish brand is the Polestar 2 EV crossover. It desperately needs to branch out, but thankfully the Polestar 3 is inching closer to dealership floors.
While Polestar has been quite successful at hiding details about the upcoming Porsche rival, details are slowly leaking out. Thanks to Dutch site AutoWeek, we can now reveal that the Polestar 3 will be 193 inches long and 77.5 inches wide. The wheelbase is less than a tenth of an inch shorter than the Volvo XC90’s wheelbase.
It seems Polestar is actually going after the Tesla Model X.
As we revealed earlier this year, when the pricing leaked, the 3 will not be cheap. As it turns out, the earlier pricing was quite conservative, and the Polestar 3 will cost more than initially thought.
Two models will be available at launch, and Polestar follows Tesla’s business model closely. The Dual Motor Long Range will cost €88,600 in Europe, which is roughly $90,000. The Dual Motor Long Range Performance starts at €95,200 or $97,000.
Both models use the same 111-kWh battery and dual motor setup, and the power output difference is not that big. The entry-level Dual Motor Long Range will likely be the big seller.
Both cars should be blisteringly fast in a straight line. The entry-level model’s motors produce a combined power output of 482 horsepower and 620 lb-ft of torque. Opt for the Performance, and you’ll get 512 hp and 671 lb-ft.
According to the leaked figures, the Performance model will reach 62 mph in 4.7 seconds, while the top speed is limited to 130 mph. That’s relatively slow for an EV, so we’re guessing it weighs quite a lot. It’s no match for Tesla’s go-faster SUV, that’s for sure.
The Long Range model can go 381 miles between charges, and the go-faster model will hit 350 miles before you need to plug it in. That means even the Performance model gets better mileage than the Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive Model X, which Tesla claims can go 330 miles between recharges.
It seems like the Polestar 3 represents a real threat to the mighty Tesla.
