Despite its extra weight.

Earlier this year, Jeep lifted the wraps off the Grand Cherokee L, a three-row SUV that slots above the Grand Cherokee and below the forthcoming Grand Wagoneer. You would think its larger size and the extra weight would have an adverse effect on the fuel economy, but, surprisingly, this is not the case. The EPA has announced fuel economy figures for the 2021 Grand Cherokee lineup, including the larger Grand Cherokee L.

So far, the EPA has only released fuel economy figures for the base model, which is powered by a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 producing 290 horsepower and 257 lb-ft of torque. A more powerful 5.7-liter Hemi V8 is also available rated at 357 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque.

With rear-drive-drive, the V6-powered Grand Cherokee L is rated at 19/26/21 mpg city/highway/combined. The four-wheel-drive variant, on the other hand, is rated at 18/25/21 mpg city/highway/combined. These figures are identical to the regular two-row Grand Cherokee, which is surprising considering the three-row variant is has a longer wheelbase and is carrying extra weight.

It’s worth noting, however, that the next-generation two-row Grand Cherokee hasn’t been revealed yet and isn’t expected to arrive until Q3, so it will likely be even more frugal than the L version. The most efficient version, however, will be the upcoming Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid.

Pricing for the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L starts at $36,995 with rear-wheel-drive and $38,995 with four-wheel-drive for the V6-powered base model, making it around $7,000 more expensive than the outgoing Grand Cherokee.

As standard, the Grand Cherokee L comes equipped with an 8.4-inch infotainment display and a 10.25-inch digital cluster. At the top of the range, the Summit Reserve trim, which is only available with four-wheel drive, starts at $61,995 with the V6 or $65,290 for the V8 variant. All prices exclude a $1,695 destination charge. Deliveries of the 2021 Grand Cherokee L are scheduled to start in Q2, 2021.
