Iconic Ferrari Daytona Shooting Brake To Be Reincarnated

Of all the current and past automobile body styles, the shooting brake is one of the rarest yet most enigmatic. With two doors and a wagon-like rear-end, it’s an amalgamation of seemingly incongruent design elements that have given us great cars such as the Ferrari GTC4Lusso and BMW Z3 M Coupe.

Design house Niels van Roij Design has a penchant for these kinds of cars, having recently unveiled the striking Breadvan Hommage. Now, the company plans to do it all over again with the Daytona Shooting Brake Hommage that will be based on a front-engined V12 grand tourer from Italy.

The original Ferrari 365 GTB/4Daytona Shooting Brake looked nothing else like any other Ferrari produced at the time, and decades later, it still fascinates. The initial sketches from Niels van Roij Design are clearly more modern, yet retain the unusual butterfly rear windows that made the original such an oddity.

The design house didn’t explicitly say which Italian GT would serve as the base car, but on his personal Instagram page, Niels van Roij eventually confirmed after numerous requests from followers that the Ferrari 599 GTB will form the foundation of the hommage. This 599 will receive design changes to nearly every single body panel for the creation of the Daytona Shooting Brake Hommage.

Thankfully, the entire design and coachbuilding process will be documented on the various Niels van Roij social media channels. “Designing the Daytona Shooting Brake Hommage commission is an honorable task and a great opportunity,” said Niels. “The project is equally ambitious as it is demanding. Rendering the legendary classic ’70s shooting brake into a contemporary piece of car design will be complex”.

If the recent Breadvan Hommage is anything to go by, the Daytona Shooting Brake Hommage will be well worth the wait and the perfect tribute to the original “winged wonder”.
