Only around 2,000 examples of the hot SUV will be produced.

Last year was a big deal for Dodge. The automaker with a penchant for horsepower revealed the 807-horsepower Challenger SRT Super Stock, the 797-hp Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye, and this, the 710-hp Durango SRT Hellcat.

It instantly became the most powerful SUV in the world, and this week, Dodge announced that it has finally started production of the Durango SRT Hellcat. Intended to be built only for the 2021 model year, this Durango can reach 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and cover the quarter-mile in just 11.5 seconds. Flat out, it’ll reach 180 mph.

These sensational performance figures are made possible by the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine, and there is simply no faster way for six occupants to get from point A to point B. “Like welcoming a new member to the family, today’s launch of the Durango SRT Hellcat celebrates the newest addition to the Brotherhood of Muscle,” said Tim Kuniskis of the newly-formed Stellantis.

Besides the SRT Hellcat’s extreme acceleration, it’s also a formidable hauler. According to Dodge, it’s rated to tow up to 8,700 pounds, although we wouldn’t want to know how much gas it’s burning through when this is happening. Its EPA-rated economy figures without a rig attached to the back are already abysmal at 12/17/13 mpg city/highway/combined.

To partially make up for the SRT Hellcat’s price tag of $80,995, Dodge will be offering customers a one-day session at the Bondurant High Performance Driving School in Arizona. With a professional instructor providing guidance, new customers will be able to acclimatize to the Durango SRT Hellcat in a controlled environment.

“The Dodge Durango Hellcat joins Charger and Challenger at the pinnacle of performance,” said Kuniskis. “Today’s start of production in Detroit deserves a spot on every enthusiast’s calendar.”

Dodge plans to produce only around 2,000 examples of the hot SUV for the US market. The model will start arriving at dealerships in spring 2021.
