  3. We Finally Know When The New Lexus RX Is Coming

The old model is ready to be retired.

Despite its age and various flaws, the 2022 Lexus RX is the Japanese automaker’s best-selling product here in the US. Lexus has attempted to keep the RX relevant with the addition of Apple CarPlay and some sporty Black Line packages, but it’s time for an all-new model. We’ve known for a while that the next-generation RX was in the works, but now Lexus has officially provided a reveal date.

Along with the first teaser for the new model, Lexus confirmed the 2023 RX will debut on Tuesday, May 31, at 8 PM Eastern Time. This is perfect timing, as Toyota will host its massive HQ Confidential event that week, which is bound to feature other important product reveals from both brands.

The single teaser image doesn’t give much away, as that’s the whole point of a “teaser” image. It gives a close look at the spindle grille, which appears to have a unique body-color element at the top that’s distinctive from other Lexus models. The L-shaped daytime running lights look pretty good and appear more closely related to those on the current Lexus NX.

No other details on the car were provided, though it’s expected to ditch the current 3.5-liter V6 in favor of the 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder used in the smaller NX. This engine was just announced for the similarly-sized Toyota Highlander, where it produces 265 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of torque. That would actually be a decrease from the V6’s 290 hp, though the torque would increase significantly from 267 lb-ft. We expect the Lexus will get a bit more power than the Toyota equivalent.

Of course, we expect the Lexus RX Hybrid to make a return as well, possibly ushering in the first use of the turbocharged engine with an electrified drivetrain for the model. The smaller NX Hybrid uses a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder with electric motors, both in the NX 350h and the plug-in NX 450h+. We predict the RX will also get a range-topping PHEV model, though it’s tough to say how much power it will produce. Inside, the RX should get the same 12.3-inch touchscreen as the NX.

As for the three-row RX L, it will likely be killed off in favor of a brand-new crossover model called the TX. The TX will reportedly debut alongside a new Toyota Grand Highlander, and sit below an upcoming next-generation GX in the Lexus lineup.
