  3. Watch Two Crazy Fords Lose Their Doors On The Drag Strip

The doors were no match for the engines.

Back in the day, if your Ford’s door fell off, it would be blamed on shoddy workmanship. These days it’s probably because it’s going too fast down the drag strip. In an amazing video shared by drag-racing legends 1320 Video, we get to see a classic Ford Maverick and fox body Mustang blow their doors off during a Texas drag event. We love a good drag race, but everyone knows there’s a certain amount of risk involved in the sport, especially when the power levels start climbing past 1,000 horsepower, and in this case, the power levels clearly overwhelmed the nuts and bolts holding that door to the car.

The amazing footage was recently shot at the Yello Belly strip in Dallas, Texas, one of the oldest drag strips in the US, and was the scene of some brutal car gore. At around the 5:30 minute mark, we see a blue Ford Mustang fox body line up against a yellow Pontiac. As the two cars make their way down the strip, the Mustang’s door gets ripped off due to sheer speed. Thankfully the spectator stands have a waist-high guard rail that protects from the belly ring down. The sheer force with which the door gets ripped off is quite shocking, and could easily kill or seriously injure innocent bystanders (isn’t that what Mustangs are best at?).

A few minutes later, a Ford Maverick – the classic car, not the all-new pickup – lines up for its run. This blacked out beast is powered by a 526 cu-in V8, and despite running on “small” slicks, still gets out the hole at an incredible rate. The Maverick takes an early lead, but halfway down the strip it too loses its door, only in a much more violent way. The door ejects itself at a 90-degree angle, and smashes into the side of the protective cement barrier. The Maverick slows down, but still takes the race. We can totally understand how this happens, but we’re yet to figure out how Brian O’Conner’s Mitsubishi Eclipse lost its floor panel after shooting too much nitrous oxide.
