Watch The Mercedes G-Class 4×4 Squared On The Move

If you thought the current Mercedes G-Class can’t get any better, think again. For the last-generation model, Mercedes unleashed a more hardcore 4×4 Squared version offering even better off-road capability and a more menacing appearance. The current-generation G Wagon has been on sale for a few years now, marking the first time the rugged off-roader has been designed in over 40 years. Mercedes currently doesn’t offer a new version of the 4×4 Squared, but we have proof that this will soon change.

Spy shots have shown Mercedes testing the next-generation G-Class 4×4 Squared. Now, the extreme off-roader has been filmed on the move for the first time.

In the video, two prototypes get put through their paces while tackling treacherous snow conditions. The test drivers don’t hold back either, piloting the prototypes down a steep hill at high speed to give the suspension and powertrain a thorough workout.

Both prototypes are lightly camouflaged, but this only makes it more obvious that the new 4×4 Squared has much wider fenders than the regular G-Class. Additional camouflage applied to the front of the roof rack suggests the off-roader is fitted with LED lights. Compared to the regular G-Class, the new 4×4 Squared appears to have a raised ride height, giving it more ground clearance for tackling tough terrain.

While they aren’t visible on these prototypes, the previous 4×4 Squared featured portal axles. Hopefully, this will be an option for the new model as well.

Like its predecessor, the new G-Class 4×4 Squared will be powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. This unit generated 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque in the old model. The new 4×4 Squared is reportedly being developed by AMG, which seems plausible as it certainly sounds aggressive in the video. It could be more powerful than the old model, but we’ll have to wait until the off-roader breaks cover to find out. With testing now underway, expect the new Mercedes G-Class 4×4 Squared to debut later this year.
