Volkswagen is leading the electric charge in Europe, and is investing heavily in its American EV program, including a massive EV charging network expansion program in preparation for its massive local onslaught. The German manufacturer is already seeing great success with the VW ID.4 crossover, and now it’s getting ready to launch the VW ID.Buzz. This minivan, inspired by the classic VW van of the 1960s promises to be a sales success in its own right, and fans in the US are already going nuts over its retro-cool styling and EV powertrain. But before VW can bring it to market, the ID.Buzz is being driven to within an inch of its life on some of the most challenging roads in the world.

When Volkswagen’s technical development and quality assurance departments set the quality requirements for the new ID.Buzz it was decided that the new EV van would have to face extreme conditions of all kinds, including extreme heat, humidity, cold, dry and damp. The van’s first test took place on the icy roads of Scandinavia where tests were made on the vehicle’s low-friction braking and steering performance, as well as its chassis set-up, cold start sequence, and material designs. The van then went down to Southern Italy where battery charging tests took place in extremely hot conditions, and dusty gravel roads were conquered in a “customer-orientated manner.” In other words; they beat the hell out of it.

The drive systems must function flawlessly, as must the liquids, all the systems and operating procedures, and the displays. In the virtual world, VW engineers have simulated the various functions of the van countless times, and it is estimated that the vehicle has completed several million kilometers digitally. Cool story. Now come test it on American roads and see how far it makes it.
