It would be the ultimate California surfer’s car.
The Volkswagen ID.Buzz continues to capture the hearts and minds of the American market, even though it was never meant to come here. We’ve seen many iterations of this fully-electric van, including an XL-sized version which was confirmed for the US earlier this month, and it’s easy to understand why people are falling in love with this utilitarian piece of EV machinery. Loosely based on the classic lines of the original VW van of the 60s and 70s, the new ID.Buzz promises to be a versatile piece of kit, and this cool concept recently released by VW proves that the Buzz has a lot more to offer than one thinks.

The ID.Buzz, Volkswagen’s first mass-produced electric minivan is constructed on the Volkswagen Group’s Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB) and can seat between five and seven people depending on the layout. The ID.Buzz promises tons of practicality, and is aimed at those with large families and active lifestyles, or small businesses looking for a green transport solution. So what better way to enhance the product than by offering a pickup version? In a recent interview, VW Group of America CEO Scott Keogh revealed that the company was seriously looking at offering an electric pickup.
“It’s something we’re actively looking at, but nothing to actually report now. I think it’s the chance of a lifetime in this segment because electrification gives you a reset moment. It gives you a chance to bring some, let’s say alternatives and some new ideas into this great segment.”
The company is currently working with Ford Australia to develop an EV variant of its popular Amarok compact pickup truck.

Volkswagen is no stranger to pickup trucks: the Amarok is currently selling in great numbers across the globe, and who can forget the legendary Volkswagen Type 2 Pickup? We like the idea of a minivan/truck combo, and we’re sure it would be a hit in the US. The ID.Buzz shares its drivetrain bits with its sibling the Volkswagen ID.4, and promises to deliver 201 horsepower with 220 lb-ft of torque from its rear-mounted electric motor. A dual-motor AWD version will eventually be released, and would work perfectly with this pickup layout. The concept car looks like it could seat five and still carry a good amount of stuff, or a great quantity of mud-covered Labrador dogs, and that’s enough to sell us on the idea.
