The IIHS is the premier crash testing agency in the United States, and its opinion of your vehicle’s safety is very important. The agency conducts the crucial front driver’s and passenger’s side overlap tests, but even if your vehicle passes these, driver aids, headlights, and even child seat anchor ease of use need to be evaluated too. American-made cars haven’t done particularly well in the past, but with innovations like Super Cruise now out there, they’re catching up. There’s still lots to do for them to achieve what Volvo now has: more Top Safety Pick+ than any other company in 2021.

In total, Volvo received nine of these prestigious awards this month. This shouldn’t be a surprise coming from the company that invented the safety belt, and with so many standard safety features including pedestrian and cyclist collision prevention systems across Volvo’s lineup, that tradition of security continues.
Anders Gustafsson, President and CEO of Volvo Car USA, says, “Safety has been the core of our business since 1927 and we always appreciate when prestigious third-party organizations recognize that.”
The brand’s ultimate goal is that no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo, which was behind the Swedish automaker’s decision to impose a speed cap on all its new vehicles. So which cars won the awards?

The Volvos that won the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award were the regular and Recharge versions of the Volvo S60, V60, XC60, and XC90. The XC40 also made the cut. Japanese cars have also performed very well in these tests, with all of the cars that were provided by Mazda for testing also passing their evaluations with flying colors. But once again, it’s Volvo that leads the way in terms of safety, and as the world starts to explore the use of autonomous driving systems, it will be innovators like Volvo that will make the technology work best.
