Toyota GR Supra Transformed Into 1,000-HP Drift Car With 2JZ Heart

Despite all the naysayers, the Toyota GR Supra has been enjoying a lot of positive attention, especially from the aftermarket scene, and while some lament the fact that it shares its powerplant with the BMW Z4, the latest Supra has seen impressive power outputs from only a few modifications. But there will always be those who want to relive the glory days, and as such, we’ve seen some GR Supra’s fitted with Toyota’s legendary 2JZ motor, which is capable of pushing well over a thousand horsepower when tuned correctly. Tuners HGK has now jumped on the bandwagon and has come up with its own 2JZ J29/DB drift racer, and it looks wild.

This car has had a number of its standard components swapped out, and its exterior now features widened fenders, brand new doors, a massive hood bulge, and a roof vent. HGK offers a comprehensive list of material options, including carbon-fiber and carbon Kevlar. To keep the weight lower still, this Supra also features Lexan door windows. The modified Supra rides on a custom drift-focused suspension system that is available with a front drift angle lock kit and rear suspension drop knuckles, a new steering column, and a performance Wilwood brake system.

Possibly the most important change to this car takes place under the hood: Gone is the controversial BMW-sourced inline-six B58 engine and in its place steps the legendary Toyota 2JZ-GTE, a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six engine with a rock-solid iron block. In standard guise, these engines produce around 300 hp, but this specific unit now churns out a massive 1,000 horses. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a Samsonas sequential gearbox with a twin-disc clutch. The standard GR Supra is already a serious sports car, but this machine takes things to the next level.
