  3. Toyota 4Runner Celebrates 40 Years With New Special Edition

Only 4,040 units will be made.

The Toyota 4Runner is a supremely capable vehicle in standard form, and with just a few changes, it can easily fulfill all your adventure needs. For the 2022 model year, it’s better than ever with more safety and more choice. 2023 will be its 40th model year, and more than 4 million units have been sold in that time. Thus, Toyota has seen fit to bestow upon it some special upgrades to celebrate that noteworthy milestone. To do so, a new model has been introduced to the US market: the 2023 4Runner 40th Anniversary Special Edition. Just 4,040 examples will be made available to American buyers.

Based on the SR5 Premium trim with four-wheel drive only, this model will be offered exclusively in three colors: White, Midnight Black Metallic, and Barcelona Red Metallic. To further set it apart, 17-inch alloy wheels in bronze are joined by a color-matched Toyota heritage grille and a bronze 40th Anniversary badge on the tailgate. A special graphics package in yellow, orange, and red was created especially for the special edition and has been tastefully added to the SUV as an homage to Toyota’s early off-road racers.

The celebratory theme carries over to the cabin, where you will find exclusive badges on the center console, a bronze-colored, cross-stitched shift knob, bronze seat stitching, 40th Anniversary floormats, and 40th Anniversary logos on the seats. A power moonroof is standard too.

Sadly there’s no bump in power from the standard 270-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 and five-speed automatic transmission, maintaining the current 5,000-lb towing capacity.

Toyota has not yet told us when the 4Runner 40th Anniversary Special Edition will be made available to the public, nor has it announced pricing for this model, but hopefully, price gouging by greedy dealers will be limited. For reference, the 2022 4Runner starts at $37,815 for the Trail Special Edition. The Anniversary model is based on the SR5 Premium trim, which starts at $41,515, but as a special edition with some extra add-ons, we expect that the price will be a little higher without overcoming the $44,880 asking price of the top TRD Off Road Premium trim. If we had to guess, we’d estimate this special edition will cost around $43,000. Hopefully, Toyota will announce costs and the on-sale date soon.

In other news, the 2023 model year 4Runner will see the TRD Pro trim offered “in the exclusive color of Solar Octane,” which joins existing hues Black, White, and Magnetic Gray Metallic. In addition, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert has been added as standard to all trim levels of the 2023 4Runner, joining other features in the Toyota Safety Sense-P suite, which includes a frontal collision avoidance system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with sway warning, automatic LED high beams, and high-speed radar cruise control. Again, we hope that these enhancements don’t have too much of an impact on pricing, but we’ll find out soon enough.
