Old-school styling meets new-school tech.
New electric car manufacturers are popping up all the time, and many of them are brilliant – just look at the new Lucid Air if you don’t believe us. As impressive as some of the new offerings out there are, there’s one company that we’re especially interested in. Late last year, we reported on a company called Alpha and its Ace retro EV. Now the company has revealed its second vehicle, the JAX. The name stands for Junior All-terrain Crossover, and like the Ace, it looks very similar to a classic Alfa Romeo GT Junior, only now it’s got better ground clearance and more space.

That name implies that the company will aim to bring bigger cars to market too, but we quite like this compact offering. A 75-kWh lithium-ion battery is expected to be fitted and should over over 250 miles of range. Alpha also says that the JAX will be capable of towing up to 1,850 pounds behind it. Without anything attached, it’ll do 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds. Alpha doesn’t tell us if this is with AWD or FWD, but we presume the figure applies to the former of the two available configurations. It all sounds pretty good, and with pricing expected to be starting at $38,000, this isn’t an unobtainable EV.

However, there are some caveats. Production has not yet begun and we haven’t seen a working prototype yet, but Alpha says that deliveries will start from 2023. In the past, fledgling automakers such as Alpha had few hopes of success, but with newcomers outselling Tesla, outdated nameplates returning to mainstream favor, and old-school British automakers embracing new ways of doing things, everybody can get a slice of the pie these days. We’re rooting for this new American brand, not because it hails from our portion of the world, but because the automaker’s designs remind us of old-school style, and with the world constantly looking forward, seeing something that reminds us of the past is most welcome.
