And its one of only three of its kind left.
When the Ford Mustang was first launched over half a century ago, few could imagine that this American Pony car would be the best-selling sports car in the world in 2022. Yes, the Mustang is loved by millions across the globe, and earlier generations have always been sought-after collectors items. We’ve covered some rare Mustang finds in our time, and we’ve got to admit, a classic Mustang never gets old. Just take this 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible: it is one of only 11 Mustang drop-tops featured at the time-traveling tunnel in the Magic Skyway at the 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair, and won the MCA Trailered Concours Gold at the 2016 Niagara show. This rare beauty is being auctioned off through Mecum, and is estimated to reach between $100k and $150K when it crosses the block at the 2022 Indy Auction tomorrow, Saturday 21 May.
This Mustang has been with the same owner since 1978, and underwent an eight-year restoration process that was completed in 2015. This is one of the few cars that transported passengers throughout the Disney-themed time tunnel at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair, and took fair-goers on a time traveling adventure from the early days of mankind, into the future. The Mustangs traveled along a glass tube and through sets filled with creepy animatronic dinosaurs, cavemen, and even wooly mammoths. They were all specially modified by Carron & Company to include welded-on brackets, suspension tie-downs and guide pins so they could safely fit on the Disney-designed “booster brake” tracks.
After carrying an estimated 40,000 passengers over 5,000 miles, these Mustangs were sent back to Carron & Company for a repaint, upholstery refresh and cleaning. The cars were then resold through Ford’s Dearborn resale lot. This specific convertible has serial number Serial No. 5F08T383386 and features a 200-horsepower six-cylinder engine mated to a C4 Cruise-O-Matic transmission and a 3.20 rear axle. It sports a power top, and even an original windshield and bumpers. The red interior features a 1966 AM radio with an 8-track player. The unique Skyway attachment points are still visible, and the odometer shows only 35,500 miles. Only three of these World’s Fair Mustangs are known to exist, making this a very collectible vehicle.
