It will star in the Japanese Super GT series.
Now that the new Nissan Z has been released into the wild, people can’t stop praising its fun-to-driver nature, and impressive value for money. This evolution of the legendary Z family promises to go down as one of the best Z cars in history, and it already has a bright future ahead of it in the world of motorsport.
Earlier this month we reported that the new Z will be racing in the Super GT series, alongside its nemesis the Toyota GR Supra, and it will have big shoes to fill. The Z replaces the highly successful GT-R GT racing car, which has a seriously impressive track record. To top off this fantastic start, the Nissan Z will also be used as the official safety car from round three of this year’s SUPER GT series.
The Nissan Z safety car will take to the Suzuka Circuit on May 28-29, and will be featured at a special presentation ceremony. It will ensure that the course is clean of any obstacles before the race starts, and will be deployed in case of an accident or course obstruction. This is a proud moment for Nissan, as its new Nissan Z GT500 car will also be competing at the famed Suzuka Circuit.
The safety car looks great in its yellow and black motif and sports large Super GT safety car branding, alongside a few Bosch decals. The roof now sports a safety light, and at the rear there are two emergency lights mounted on either side of the number plate holder, and two in the front grille. The interior remains mostly unchanged, but the cabin now houses two Recaro racing bucket seats with four-point Nismo harnesses.
Under the hood, the Nissan Z safety car features a VR30DDTT 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 producing 400 hp and 350 lb-ft torque. Power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels via a standard six-speed manual transmission with rev-matching, or a nine-speed automatic. With a nimble chassis, responsive steering, and a 0-60 mph sprint time in the low four second range, we have no doubt that the Nissan Z will make a great safety car. Let’s just hope it gets deployed when a Supra takes a spill, and not one of its own kind.
