Don’t expect to see the new EV anytime soon.
BMW has released a ton of exciting new models this year, with the focus being on electric models. Sure the BMW M5 CS is exciting, and the Alpina B8 is going to turn some serious heads, but the future lies in cars such as the upcoming BMW iX, the German automaker’s first all-electric vehicle built from the ground up. Back in November 2020, we got our first look at this all-electric Beemer, which was set to enter production this year but the latest news is that production of the BMW iX will commence in March 2022.
According to iX Forums, BMW will start production with the top of the line model. This means early buyers will get the most power, massive 21-inch alloy wheels, active steering, and air suspension as standard. BMW has not yet released a full list of the iX’s features and options, but we do know that it will be the first 5G-capable BMW product, and will offer technologically advanced features such as automated driving and parking functionality. The iX will also offer premium features such as 2.5-zone automatic climate control, a head-up display unit, as well as an optional 18-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system.
Five can be seated in the iX’s cabin which will have a “lounge-like ambiance” according to BMW. The iX won’t be a slouch either: BMW’s fifth-generation eDrive technology consists of a 496-horsepower “power unit” that is made up of two electric motors. This will allow the iX to sprint to sixty in under five seconds, and the EPA rates that the iX’s range will be more than 300 miles, which is still far behind the Tesla Model X’s range of 371 miles. Next-generation charging will allow the iX to handle a 10-80% charge in under 40 minutes. We know it’s still a long way off, and a lot can change in a year, but we’re pretty pumped for the iX.
