We’re not surprised by this at all.

Polestar is only just starting to break into the American market, but there are plenty of reasons that the Swedish brand should be well-received by buyers. Both the Polestar 1 and Polestar 2 have gorgeous designs, the company has proven to be one of the most environmentally-friendly in the world, and as the brand is a Volvo offshoot, all Polestar models are remarkably safe. That last point is not a surprise at all, but we’re not just saying this based on what the manufacturer says. The European New Car Assessment Programme, or Euro NCAP, recently crash-tested the Polestar 2 and the results were typically excellent. Euro NCAP’s opinion of a car is especially important since the agency updates its test protocols every two years.

These updates make the agency best-equipped to evaluate the latest in advanced driver assistance systems and also ensure that the structure of a vehicle is as safe as can be. So how did the Polestar 2 fare, exactly? As you can probably guess, the electric vehicle achieved the best possible score of five stars out of five. What’s more, when compared to other EVs that were tested under older, more lax protocols, the Polestar 2 still performed exceptionally well.

That’s what happens when safety is just as important as every other aspect of the car, as CEO Thomas Ingenlath says: “Volvo Cars is one of our founders and by sharing their expertise with us, safety is a core competence in our cars. This shows in the excellent Euro NCAP rating of Polestar 2.”

One of the features contributing to the Polestar 2’s excellent rating is its suite of eight airbags that includes inner-side airbags, otherwise known as central airbags. At the time of writing, the peppy Volkswagen ID.3 – which is not available in the US – was the only other battery-electric vehicle fitted with these central airbags. Of course, other features like Pilot Assist adaptive cruise control as well as vehicle, cyclist, and pedestrian detection systems, are all just as important. With Polestar just entering the North American arena, these standard safety features will go a long way to bolstering the brand’s image, and with so many new automakers vying for EV supremacy, such great safety scores give the fledgling marque great bragging rights.
