After this, everything changes.
Even BMW must be a bit nervous about replacing the current BMW M2 with an all-new model. After all, the M2 is one of the most universally-loved modern BMWs with its compact size, sharp handling, classic inline-six engine, and sporty styling. The 2023 M2 has already been shown off wearing M Performance parts, and this week, the rear end of the new M2 leaked online – not everyone liked what they saw, to be quite frank. For all that’s new and controversial about the 2023 M2, we now know that it will also represent the end of an era. This will be the last non-hybrid BMW M car, and that includes electrification of the mild-hybrid type, too.
BMW M boss Frank van Meel was speaking to Bimmer Today when he made the declaration about the new M2’s powertrain, saying that it would be “the last M with a pure combustion engine and also without electrification scopes like a 48-volt electrical system.” BMW’s mild-hybrid 48-volt system has gradually been introduced to other models in recent times, including the six-cylinder variants of the updated 3 Series sedan.
All of this means that the M2 is the last “pure” M car as it will still offer rear-wheel drive and a manual transmission. The absence of any electrical components will help BMW keep the new M2’s weight down, an important factor considering that the current M240i xDrive already weighs close to 3,900 pounds.

While the new M2 won’t yet make the transition to electrification, the same can’t be said for other M products. BMW’s first hybridized M5 is on the way, and it has already been spied in icy Sweden. We expect that this M5 will use the same 750-horsepower plug-in hybrid powertrain found in the upcoming XM SUV. While BMW’s M division has changed a lot over the last few years – and not always for the better – the 2023 M2 is, at least for now, a reassuringly familiar prospect. Its traditional powertrain will give old-school enthusiasts a final reason to celebrate before hybrids and EVs take over completely.
