TEASED: Here’s Your First Look At The New Hybrid Corvette

Are you sitting down? Because we have some news. The Corvette will go electric. Ok, so this may not be groundbreaking, as President Biden teased that he’d be the first person to drive the electric Vette almost two years ago.

But now it’s 100 percent official. In a LinkedIn post, General Motors President Mark Reuss confirmed that Chevrolet will offer an electrified and fully-electric version of the Corvette based on the Ultium platform, which currently underpins the GMC Hummer EV.

“In addition to the amazing new Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and other gas-powered variants coming, we will offer an electrified and a fully electric, Ultium-based Corvette in the future. In fact, we will offer an electrified Corvette as early as next year. Details and names to come at a later date,” announced Reuss.

Gas-powered models like the 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and its 5.5-liter flat-plane crank V8 aren’t going anywhere just yet, but they will be joined by more efficient (and likely faster) electrified models.

Reuss continued: “In addition, we also announced today Ultium Platform’s energy recovery system, a patented onboard system that takes the heat generated by EV batteries and uses it to warm the cabin, create more efficient charging conditions, and even increase vehicle acceleration. And it can boost the vehicle’s range by about 10%. It’s a perfect example of how developing a ground-up EV platform like Ultium enables unique features not easily done with a retrofit.”

The Corvette hybrid, rumored to be called the E-Ray, has already been spotted out testing. It will reportedly use a combination or plug-in hybrid drivetrain, likely paired with the Stingray’s 6.2-liter V8 mounted in the middle.

Chevy will supplement the V8’s power with an electric motor on the front axle, creating an all-wheel drive system without a mechanical connection, similar to the setup in the Acura NSX.

The base Corvette can already crack a sub-three-second 0-60 mph, so imagine how quick it will be with four driven wheels plus instant electric torque.

As for the all-electric model, much less is known about it aside from President Biden claiming it will crack 200 mph.

With no production timeline for the Tesla Roadster, Chevy has a unique opportunity to create the ultimate electric supercar that doesn’t cost more than a million dollars, but it will likely still be a long while before GM is happy with the first such ‘Vette.

The Corvette will join other exciting EVs from GM, including the Silverado, Equinox, Blazer, Lyriq, Celestiq, and Sierra 1500. GM will soon have the most diverse EV lineup of any automaker, ranging from sports cars to pickup trucks.
