It will be based on a new R2 platform.
Like fellow start-up Lucid Motors, Rivian has managed to navigate the challenges facing the automotive industry with confidence. That’s not to say there haven’t been any challenges; consistent delays have proved frustrating for both customers and the company. The now proposed layoffs aren’t a good look, either.
As R1T truck production kicks into high gear and the company prepares to deliver the first batch of R1S SUVs, the company recently shared that it will introduce an all-new model by 2025. As per AutoGuide.com, this was confirmed by a letter sent out to shareholders. The company’s third passenger electric vehicle will be based on a new platform called R2 and, apart from that, there’s no information as to what type of vehicle it will be.
Rivian
In the communique, Rivian notes the R2 is an important part of its future, to “grow and expand [the] product portfolio globally across different price points and form factors.” With that in mind, we’re guessing this future model will be priced more affordably and undercut the $67,500 R1T. If Rivian wants to make an impact, it would create a compact crossover to rival the likes of the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E.
Another possibility is that Rivian may be targeting the yet-to-be-introduced Fisker Pear, a sub-$30,000 electric vehicle that should hit the scene by 2024. Then again, Rivian has gained a great following in the truck community. It wouldn’t be unexpected if the R2 debuts as a smaller electric truck to rival the upcoming Maverick and Ranger Lightning.
The shareholder letter also notes that increasing production at its Illinois plant and the advent of the R2 will help the company attain success and grow as the years roll on. As mentioned, manufacturing delays have been the source of many headaches for RJ Scaringe’s automaker. We assume that the R2 will be built at the aforementioned Illinois facility, as the development of the Georgia factory is only expected to commence in 2024.
Whatever form the R2 may take, we’re guessing it will be an excellent contender in its chosen segment. Judging by the R1T, Rivian has a knack for ingenuity and thinking out of the box. If those attributes can be rejigged into a compact crossover or midsize premium SUV, Rivian will have a winner on its hands – providing it can meet demand, of course.
