Rivian Just Leaked A New Body Type For The R1T

Ahead of deliveries starting in the summer, the Rivian R1T has been busy undergoing extreme testing. We’ve seen the electric truck take some serious punishment off-road on rocky trails in the Arizona desert and in freezing conditions in Baudette near Minnesota.

With temperatures as low as -40° F, Rivian was able to see how cold weather affects the electric truck’s charging, range, and thermal. In videos and photos released from the cold weather testing, eagle-eyed fans on the Rivian Owners Club forum noticed that one of the prototypes looked different, suggesting that Rivian could be developing a new unannounced variant.

So far, the Rivian R1T has only been shown with a crew cab configuration, but the prototype with white camouflage appears to have an extended cab rather.

A close-up shot of the profile shows the prototype has smaller rear doors and windows than the regular crew cab. Some forum users suggested the angle of the photo could be deceiving, but the truck also appears to have a smaller wheelbase, so this could be our first look at the Rivian R1T extended cab. Rivian hasn’t announced an extended cab version of the R1T, but it would make sense to offer the electric truck with different cab configurations to suit different requirements and budgets.

For reference, the R1T crew cab starts at $67,500 while the sold-out Launch Edition had an MSRP of $75,000, but extended cabs tend to be cheaper than crew cabs. Since Rivian hasn’t announced it yet, the cheaper extended cab will likely go on sale after the crew cab, which starts production in June.

Technical specifications should be identical, however. Four electric motors combine to produce 754 hp and 826 lb-ft of torque, enabling the electric truck to accelerate from 0-62 mph in just three seconds. Three battery sizes will be available including 105-, 135-, and 180-kWh. The largest 180-kWh battery will provide a range of 400 miles and charge from five to 80 percent in less than an hour.
