The Taycan is the latest car hit by the art car craze.
Art cars may be an acquired taste, but they certainly attract attention. For over 40 years, BMW has collaborated with artists to create some stunning and some downright bizarre art cars, and now the Porsche Taycan 4S has been given the art car treatment. Porsche has teamed up with American artist Richard Phillips to create a colorful take on the automaker’s first-ever electric sports car.
Created live at the Leuehof pop-up restaurant on Zurich’s Bahnhofstrasse last December, the striking artwork is based on Leuehof’s ‘Queen of the Night’ large-scale painting from 2010 inspired by Swiss landscape artist Adolf Dietrich’s work. The colorful floral design flows up the front hood, fenders, doors, before revealing a blue sky and butterflies adorning the roof.

“The Queen of the Night livery culminates at the rear of the car with its namesake blossom wrapping completely around the bumper while being dramatically lit up by the Taycan’s signature horizontal light bar,” Phillips explains. “Conceptually, my Queen of the Night livery takes into consideration that the design of the Taycan is an instant icon of electric mobility and speed.”
To adapt the artwork for the Taycan, the full-size painting was printed on vinyl and applied to the car with heat guns. Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, the manufacturer’s bespoke division, also added unique design flourishes including illuminated door sill panels inscribed with “Queen of the Night” and door projectors that illuminate Phillips’ signature.

Porsche of Switzerland’s CEO, Michael Glinski, added: “Porsche’s first purely electric sports car, the Taycan, represents a new chapter in the company’s history. We wanted to capture this achievement by working together with a leading artist. The result is this creation, which reflects the guiding principles of sustainability and electromobility and of course also places a strong focus on nature in Switzerland. By auctioning the work and donating the proceeds we want to help the Swiss cultural landscape, which has been hit especially hard by the pandemic. Porsche has set a confident course through this crisis and we are eager to give something back to the community.”
If you fancy owning this automotive work of art, the one-off Porsche Taycan art car will be sold at an online RM Sotheby’s charity auction starting on April 6 and ending on April 13. All proceeds will go to the Suisseculture Sociale association to support artists in Switzerland affected by the pandemic.
