One-Of-One Bugatti Divo Lady Bug Redefines "Custom"

This is so much more than just a paint job.

Deliveries of Bugatti’s spectacular Divo hypercar began in the second half of last year, with the first US deliveries happening at the start of this year. As with poorer gearheads like you and I, Divo owners want to stand out from the crowd, however exclusive that crowd may be. But with just 40 units produced, you may think that personalizing a Divo in a unique manner is a simple process. It sure can be, but for some, a different color is not enough. For some, commissioning a custom design from the maker of some of the most exclusive hypercars on the planet is the only way to do things. In this instance, the result is a one-off special called the Bugatti Divo ‘Lady Bug’.

So it’s got a special paint job – big deal. Not quite. The geometric-dynamic algorithmic fading pattern you see on the body of this Divo was created in collaboration with an exclusive customer and took over 18 months to implement. Special new colors were also created, called Customer Special Red and Graphite. Both of these are metallic colors and look astonishing on the body of the car. The design itself is just as gorgeous and is made up of approximately 1,600 diamonds. Obviously, the design process began with computer modeling and numerous test prints of vinyl being applied to a test car, but even that was not simple.

Due to the fact that the team created the design on a computer, printed it onto a flat surface, and then applied it to a three-dimensional canvas (the car), even a discrepancy of one millimeter could throw the whole design off, making it look asymmetrical or distorted. Jorg Grumer, Head of Color & Trim at Bugatti Design, says that “after numerous failed ideas and attempts to apply the diamonds, we were close to giving up and saying: ‘We cannot meet the customer’s request.'”

But of course, for a company that built the fastest car in the world in two different decades, giving up is not an option. Once the basic design was finally resolved, applied to a test car, and perfected, it was eventually applied for the first and last time to the customer car, before painting and finally removal of the vinyl stencil. Painting took the artist over two weeks to complete, but the results have certainly been worth the effort.

An unnamed US customer has now taken delivery of his unique Lady Bug, giving him ultimate bragging rights over other Divo owners. We have no idea what the incredible paint job cost him, but with the Divo retailing for over $6 million and the painting process taking so long, we’re sure you could buy a nice ocean villa for less.
