Hanna Schönwald has got hands like a surgeon.
Let’s be honest. Art cars are pretty rad. They take an existing design, be it something new or something timeless, and totally alter the way that design is perceived. BMW has a particular penchant for art cars. So does Porsche, who recently showcased another, done in collaboration with artist Hanna Schönwald.
The car in question is a 964-generation Porsche 911. Unlike the wild Porsche Taycan art car the brand showed off earlier this year, this one is a more subtle take, relying more on the lines of the 911 than anything. It’s also very much in line (pun) with Hanna’s art, which mostly uses black lines over white canvas to tell whatever story she has in mind.

The whole story actually starts about a year ago, when a client loaned their 964 911 to Schönwald for the project. Porsche initially produced the video above in German but has kindly dubbed it over in English, likely accounting for the traction it’s getting now. Apparently, Schönwald quit her full-time job as a vehicle designer to make the project happen. Talk about commitment.
Schönwald says the project began as a series of sketches on paper. Fitting really, when you consider that she’s also an illustrator. The art found on the car itself was heavily influenced by these initial sketches. It appears Schönwald drew the car from scratch, using her own unique art style to create the illustration. From there, the design was effectively transferred to the car.

Now, that’s not to downplay the talent required to create an art car. It’s not like Schönwald simply went out there with some 911-sized sheets of tracing paper and a printer. In the video, you can tell that doing this, and doing it right, took time. Each line you see on the final car was done by hand, with Hanna using tape to help lay out the design on the car’s white paint.
Hanna clearly has a history with cars. She’s said on her Instagram that she loves to restore them and that the hobby was initially bourne of necessity. Originally, all she could do was work on her cars to keep them on the road. Art might be subjective, but the passion that went into the project is obvious Whether you like it or not, you’ve got to admire the work that went into creating this one-of-a-kind 911.
