  3. OFFICIAL: The Toyota Supra Is Getting A Manual Transmission

Toyota is answering our prayers.

There are many reasons why some Toyota enthusiasts were disappointed with the current Supra. The BMW-sourced engines were a common complaint, but many would-be buyers say they were turned off by a lack of a manual transmission option. Toyota has been rumored to be working on a manual option for over a year now, but the rumors juicy gossip has completely solidified. The Japanese automaker has officially confirmed that the Supra will get a manual transmission option via a teaser image.

The Toyota USA Twitter account tweeted out a picture of three pedals with the caption, “Did you think we were done? Stay tuned…” The caption includes the hashtags “Supra, manual, and Lets Go Places.”

This is huge news, as the 2022 Toyota GR Supra (as well as the 2020 and 2021 model years) were only available with an eight-speed ZF-sourced automatic transmission. That transmission was paired to either a 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 255 horsepower or a 3.0-liter inline-six producing 382 hp (formerly 335 hp in 2020). It’s still unclear if Toyota will offer this new manual box on the 2.0 model, 3.0 model, or both.

Accross the pond in the UK, Toyota shared a press release claiming “to meet the demands of driving purists, the Toyota GR Supra Manual Transmission has been engineered to offer enthusiasts something that is closer to the Gazoo Racing DNA and will enhance the driving experience.” The company’s UK arm also shared a teaser of a red Supra badge, which will distinguish the manual model from the outside.

Along with the red exterior badging, Toyota UK included two different pedal boxes in its press release. One features simple circular rubber elements, while the other features a design that’s more in line with the Supra’s current pedals. This could hint that both engine variants, the four-cylinder and six-cylinder, will each receive a manual option.

“More information will be shared in the coming weeks,” the press release says.
