Mercedes G500 Final Edition Drop-Top Could Be A Solid $600,000 Investment

Until the Tesla Model S and virtue signaling came along, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class used to be the must-have accessory in Hollywood. The pinnacle of G-Class ownership was the G-Class Cabriolet, which was unfortunately sent out to pasture around the same time as the Model S came along.

Mercedes tried again a few years later with the Maybach G650 Landaulet, but the time of the gas-guzzling drop-top had passed. Only 99 were built, and the final one was sold at a charity auction.

Did you know the standard G-Class Final Edition cabby was almost as exclusive? Only 200 were built, which makes it rarer than most Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Porsches. It’s also a lot less ghastly than the Maybach Landaulet, especially in Indium Gray Metallic

A 15,000-mile G500 Final Edition will be old at the upcoming Monterey Jet Center Auction on August 18, and it’s expected to sell for between $500,000 to $600,000. Not bad, considering it cost roughly $160,000 when it was new. A pile of money that large can also pay for three to four brand-new Mercedes-AMG G63 models.

The G500 Final Edition is powered by the older 5.5-liter naturally aspirated V8, not the more recent 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged powertrain. It’s no slouch, however. The non-AMG V8 still produces 382 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque, which is suitable for a 0-60 mph sprint time of 6.2 seconds.

With the top down, it makes the kind of noises that scares Jeep Wrangler owners.

This particular G500 Final Edition is tastefully presented in Indium Gray Metallic with a Sand Designo leather interior. The beige soft-top looks stunning when up and even better when it’s neatly stowed behind the rear seats.

The G500 is an epic off-roader with 8.1 inches of ground clearance, three differential locks, and extremely short overhangs at the front and rear. Whether anyone would be crazy enough to get a $500,000 off-roader muddy remains to be seen.

The G500 Final Edition will likely be the last of its kind, as the G-Class is expected to go electric in 2024.
