Mercedes EQS Shows Off Its Sleek Production Body

Two years after the Vision EQS concept debuted, Mercedes is preparing to unveil the production EQS that will essentially be the electric alternative to the combustion-powered S-Class. Back in January, Mercedes previewed the swanky 56-inch Hyperscreen that will display the latest MBUX infotainment system. Now, Mercedes has previewed the flagship electric sedan’s sleek silhouette, giving us a first look at the production car uncamouflaged.

Shown in a single teaser image shared on social media, the Mercedes EQS boasts slick, coupe-style proportions incorporating a long sloping roofline, while the frameless doors and flush door handles give the luxury sedan a clean profile.

In contrast to the S-Class, the EQS is technically classed as a five-door hatchback rather than a four-door sedan. Unlike its smaller EQE sibling, which features a traditional trunk as seen in recent spy shots, the EQS will have a liftback.

With its spacious cabin and focus on luxury, the EQS aims to be in a class of its own above the likes of the Audi e-tron GT, Tesla Model S, and Porsche Taycan. Mercedes isn’t ready to reveal the technical specifications yet, but they should be similar to the concept’s. Powering that car are two electric motors combining to produce 469 horsepower and 560 lb-ft of torque, enabling the electric sedan to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.5 seconds.

Mercedes has, however, confirmed that the EQS will travel 435 miles on a single charge based on WLTP ratings. In the US, the EPA estimate will likely be around 400 miles, so it could have an even better range than the Model S Long Range Plus, which was the first EV with an EPA rating of over 400 miles.

Mercedes is also developing an SUV version that will be sold alongside the EQS liftback. Mercedes still hasn’t confirmed when the EQS will debut, but its world debut should be close now that the German automaker has revealed the elegant exterior’s silhouette. Reports claim it will debut next month, so we don’t have to wait much longer to find out how Mercedes will revolutionize electric luxury sedans.
