It’s not a new car; it’s a service plan.
After more than a decade of saving, I recently had a look at my bank balance and decided that it was time for me to buy a Bugatti, but the only thing that held me back was the thought of maintaining it so that it would always be as desirable as it is now. Although I was considering a scale model, people who can actually afford the real things also see the value in a maintenance plan, especially when the Veyron’s tires alone cost over 40 grand a set. You can just imagine what services cost, with an oil change alone setting you back $21,000. Fortunately, Bugatti now offers extended maintenance plans for both the Veyron and the Chiron. As you’d expect, roadside assistance and alternative transportation are offered too, no matter where in the world you get stuck.

All joking aside, it’s quite obvious that an 8.0-liter, quad-turbocharged W16 engine with over 1,000 horsepower needs special care. The reason these services cost so much is that the Veyron and Chiron are very tightly packaged and are not designed to be easy to work on – they’re designed to be fast. But why offer extended service plans for people who are so wealthy that they can buy islands as their sixth holiday homes?
Well, “Bugatti recognizes that the highly designed, era-defining Veyron model might now form part of a collection, rather than being driven regularly. But even hyper sports cars that record a minimal distance every year require servicing, in order to deliver that incredible Bugatti performance whenever required.” That’s one part of it, but the other aspect is that a potentially ill-maintained Bug showing up for sale would lessen the overall perceived value of the brand. Because the plan, called Passeport Tranquillite, is bought for the car and not the owner, it transfers if your Veyron or Chiron is sold on, and this is good for everyone.

Various options are available and can be tailored to your requirements, with either two- or four-year plans. For Veyron owners, you get a choice between ‘Active’ and ‘Collector’ plans, with the former obviously meant for those who drive their cars regularly and the latter for cars that do not exceed 200 kilometers (124 miles) per year. With the Chiron, only a four-year plan is currently offered and includes the annual 14-hour ‘Low’ service as well as the 72-hour-long ‘Major’ service. If Manny Khoshbin is reading, his multiple Bugattis can get a tailored group package too.
There’s no word on what Divo owners can expect, but there’ll likely be a similar offering released in a couple of years from now. Obviously, if you need to ask what these packages cost, you’re not likely a Bugatti customer.
