  3. Lamborghini Officially Enters Hypercar Endurance Racing

Welcome to the big leagues.

When one thinks of Italian motorsport, Ferrari immediately comes to mind, but many forget that Lamborghini is also highly involved in the international racing scene, and is especially successful in the GT series. The Lamborghini Huracan has been the base for many successful GT-class racers, but Lamborghini has now announced that it’s ready to take the next step in the FIA World Endurance Championship and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship by developing its own Le Mans Daytona hybrid car (LMDh). The new Lambo LMDH will compete under the FIA’s Hypercar class and the IMSA’s GTP class in 2024. Yes please!

Lamborghini has had a highly successful time in the international GT classes and has been running the international Lamborghini Trofeo one-make series with great success. Over the last seven years, the Italian supercar builder has accumulated more than 40 titles, including three consecutive wins in the GT Daytona class at the 24 Hours at Daytona between 2018 and 2020 – a feat that is yet to be matched by any other manufacturer. With the introduction of an LMDh car, Lamborghini will be able to compete for overall victories in the famous 12 Hours of Sebring, 24 Hours at Daytona, and the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it will face stiff competition from other LMDh competitors such as Porsche.

Due to the FIA’s deep love for red tape and bureaucracy, LMDh cars will not be able to score points in the 2022 season, as the council prepares new regulations for 2023, but will allow these extreme cars to compete on a race-by-race basis. Nevertheless, Lamborghini cannot wait to enter the big leagues.

“This step up into the highest echelon of sports car racing marks an important milestone for our company,” said company chairman and CEO Stephan Winkelmann. “We will be measuring ourselves against the very best, on the most demanding proving grounds. On one hand, this will give our successful motorsports program even more visibility, but it will also allow us to test future technologies: our LMDh prototypes will become our most sophisticated open laboratory on four wheels.” With a record sales year in 2021, Lamborghini is in a prime position to launch an all-out attack on the global endurance scene. Hopefully, a roadgoing alternative to its hypercar endurance racer will follow at some point.
