  3. Jeep Wrangler Rubicon FarOut Special Edition Bids Farewell To The Diesel Engine

But Jeep isn’t saying goodbye to the EcoDiesel altogether.

Early this week, we got wind of a new final special edition of the EcoDiesel Wrangler via a leak. Now, it turns out the leak was right. Meet the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon FarOut, a final limited edition Wrangler intended to mark the end of EcoDiesel production.

Jeep originally introduced the EcoDiesel in 2020, and it was, at the time, the torquiest Wrangler to date, with 442 lb-ft. Of course, since then, we’ve gotten the Rubicon 392 (470 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque) and the 4xe (375 hp and 470 lb-ft). If you ask us, it sounds like Jeep read the room, deciding it was probably a better idea to simplify the lineup a bit and axe a diesel in the middle of the biggest push for greener cars the industry has ever seen.

The new FarOut gets a number of special items fit for a special edition Jeep, including some standard equipment. The FarOut gets Dana 44 front and rear axles, a 3.73 axle ratio, as well as a two-speed transfer case with 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio – the latter previously unavailable with the diesel engine. On top of that, you’ll get a “Diesel 3.0L” hood graphic and “3.0 D” badging.

Jeep will also offer special 17-inch wheels, black seats with red accents and leather upholstery, the Cold Weather Group, which comes with luxuries like a heated steering wheel, and the Trailer-Tow and Heavy-Duty Electrical Group. Finally, changes are rounded off with the addition of the Safety and LED Lighting Groups, body-color fender flares, a satin black grille, and all-weather floor mats.

“The Wrangler Rubicon FarOut special edition is our tip of the hat to the EcoDiesel technology on Wrangler,” said Jim Morrison, senior VP and head of Jeep North America.

The EcoDiesel, white remarkably potent, perhaps didn’t impress fans of the brand much, While its torque was much appreciated, it was an expensive piece of kit requiring $3,510 for the engine and a further $2,500 for the specific variant of the eight-speed automatic gearbox it required, pushing the price of a Rubicon to over $53,000 before other options.

But before you get all glum that the diesel is disappearing, it’s only going away on the Wrangler, but will remain available on other models.

The Gladiator truck will continue to offer Jeep’s 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 in addition to the standard 3.6-liter V6, giving you the torque you need for towing and rock-crawling adventures.

Jeep says that the new 2023 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon FarOut edition is available to order until the end of November 2022 and that deliveries will start in the fourth quarter of this year.

While we may never know why the Jeep chose to axe only half of its diesel lineup, we’re curious to see how well these final models sell. Pricing has yet to be announced, but speccing a current Rubicon with as many of these options as possible – excluding the unique wheels, graphics, and Rock-Trac transfer case – already brings the price to just under $63,000. We expect similar pricing for this run-out model.
