Less like a Land Cruiser and more like a Porsche Cayenne.

The 2021 Lexus LX 570 is the brand’s most expensive SUV, starting at $86,730. The LX is currently based on the Toyota Land Cruiser, but with that model going away after 2021, rumors predict that the next-generation model may become its own unique product. While Lexus says it will always have a place in its lineup for an off-road capable SUV, a new rumor from Best Car Web claims that the automaker will introduce a different sort of SUV.

According to the Japanese outlet, Lexus will introduce a new flagship SUV model called the LF, based on the LF-1 Limitless Concept (pictured below) from the 2018 Detroit Auto Show. Unlike the Land Cruiser-based LX, the LF will rival SUVs like the Porsche Cayenne and Maserati Levante.

To stand a chance against performance-oriented SUVs like those, the LF will need to pack some serious firepower. Under the hood, the rumored powertrain will be a choice of the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 or V6 hybrid setup from the LS 500. For reference, the LS 500 produces 415 horsepower while the LS 500h develops 354 combined hp. Those options should put the LF within pecking distance of the standard Cayenne and Levante, while a higher-performance version should rival the Cayenne Turbo and Levante Trofeo.

The LF may receive Lexus’ long-rumored 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, which is also expected to power the brand’s incoming F models like the IS F, LS F, and LC F. If the rumors about this new V8 are true, it could produce as much as 660 hp, putting it well above the outputs of its rivals.

We’ve previously reported on similar rumors, although it was previously believed the SUV would be called the LQ, but the fact that they’ve once again surfaced suggests there was substance to them.

We expect Lexus to tone down the styling from the LF-1 while retaining some styling elements and similar proportions. Lexus seems to have other plans to replace the RX and RX L, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the LF arrive as a two-row SUV with a larger, more mainstream three-row SUV below it in the lineup. Using the LS 500’s pricing as a benchmark, we predict its new Lexus flagship will start around $76,000.
