Never lend your car to a shoot without being there on-site.

If you are true car enthusiast, you have likely spent thousands on keep you car looking new and parking far away from any danger. You might glance out the office window to make sure it’s okay, or maybe even get cameras installed to see who is lurking around your car while you aren’t there. If you are like Stan Chen of Los Angeles, CA you have definitely checked many of those boxes while fitting the profile. But at the same time, you want your car, your sponsors and notoriety out there, so renting your car out for a rap video shoot might have seemed like a brilliant idea at the time. But then it’s returned trashed and you immediately regret that decision.
As an employee at Toyo tires, Chen’s 1988 BMW M3 is well-known in the BMW community and internet famous as he heavily documents his M3’s show and media attention. But this is the wrong kind of attention, and one that had Chen and the commenters blood boiling.

His 1988 M3 dubbed the #Crazy88M3 is a unique blend of OEM goodness and custom modifications. While on the outside, everyone can agree the body, paint and carbon fiber accents are dramatic, the stanced-fitment Rotiform wheels might not be for everyone. But we conclude the custom wheels on the car are a welcome hat-tip to the BBS turbo-fans of yesteryear. While those turbo-fan designs might have taken a pounding in Motorsport, this particular car lives a sheltered life.
Well, until Chen was contacted by a producer for a paid classic car gig in the Cali desert where it got whopped like a rented econo-box. “Yes, that was my car in the “Real Talk” video that released yesterday. Yes, it got REALLY dirty!” lamented Chen. “No, I was not happy with SEVERAL other things the production team did that I specifically said they could not do. Things are getting handled though.”

Sounds like the video producers just went off script on the new YouTube video for rapper RoddyRich. We seriously doubt Chen would agree to someone sitting on the E30 M3 hood while driving, in super dusty conditions and as we noted, with the rear vent windows open. The desert silt is extremely fine and will get everywhere, including inside and around the painstakingly rebuilt S14 4-cylinder motor.
The jury is out on whether involvement in any video production is a solid idea. We have heard of contacts lending out Lambos that are horribly mistreated because often the rental agreements are far less legally binding than, say, an exotic rental with their lofty 5-figure deposits. One Instagram commenter @the_derek_whitacre quipped: “I have never seen a car rented to a production that didn’t come back with $$$ of repairs needed, or parts just missing.”
