It won’t be easier for American BMW dealers, either.
The new BMW M4 CSL is a hugely exciting car. Released just in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of BMW M, this razor-sharp driver’s tool is only the third Bimmer to wear the hallowed CSL badge. Powered by the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six found in the regular M4, the lighter CSL sports even more muscle – 543 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, to be exact.
BMW fans are undoubtedly salivating over the prospect of owning this special M car. With production limited to 1,000 examples, getting your hands on one will prove difficult. Some BMW dealers may even have an issue obtaining an M4 CSL, reports BMW Blog. The publication estimates between 200 – 250 examples will make their way stateside but, with 367 dealers littered across the country, retailers will have to fight each other for the keys.
Obviously, BMW USA will carefully select dealers worthy of receiving an M4 CSL but, as reported, all M Certified Dealers will receive one example. The remaining units will then be distributed to other BMW dealers; most likely retailers with strong sales figures and excellent reputations.
Priced at $139,990, the M4 CSL is hugely expensive – that’s even more than the recently revealed BMW 760i xDrive. We don’t expect many to be put off by the six-figure price tag, though, but we really hope the desirable 911 GT3 rival isn’t subjected to the so-called market adjustments we’ve seen of late.
Low supply and high demand has seen some dealerships jack up the prices on highly desirable vehicles. We’ve already found examples of the F-150 Lightning selling for over $140,000. Hopefully, BMW USA has something up its sleeve to prevent this.
Even if the M4 CSL is the recipient of unfortunate markups, we’re in no doubt that it will sell out almost immediately. The CSL badge hasn’t been affixed to the rear of a BMW for nearly two decades, last seen on the iconic E46 M3 CSL. BMW placed the old model on a crash diet, removing every single item it deemed unnecessary.
This paid off, as the modern classic is now considered to be one of the greatest handling cars of the 21st century. The same ethos has been applied to the M4 CSL; the German automaker has reduced overall weight by 240 lbs, making this Porsche-hunting bruiser a relative lightweight – it tips the scales at just 3,640 lbs. If your heart is set on purchasing M’s latest creation, we hope you’re on really good terms with your BMW dealer.
