Is anyone else seeing the Saturn Sky influence?

The SUV craze is far from over, and the sale of sedan vehicles doesn’t look all that great, but that doesn’t mean it is completely dead in the water. GM still sells some rather competent sedan models such as the mean Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing and the perennial Chevrolet Malibu, but these cars could be facing discontinuation in the near future. We understand that these choices are purely economical, but we don’t want to live in a world dominated by hulking SUVs. As it turns out, neither does GM’s Lead Exterior Designer Kevin Nougarede, whose latest design has been shared via the official GM Design Instagram account. We’re not getting our hopes up, but this sleek-looking sketch gets us excited for what future GM sedans and coupes might look like.

The car posted to Instagram features a singular vertical bodyline and offers no clear indication of how people would get in and out of the cabin. We’ve previously seen designs from the account showcasing potential future SUVs and crossovers, as well as the alternative designs for the GMC Hummer, but a large portion of the designs appear to be dedicated to sleek sports coupes and sedans.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean that the company is officially working on a new sedan or coupe, and is more likely just the design team stretching its creative muscles.

Be that as it may, the design is still spectacular, and really catches the eye. Those massively flared wheel arches in the back, filled with massive multi-spoke wheels look mean, but the ridiculously low roofline and slim windows can’t be great for visibility.

It is interesting to note that the front-end of this concept vehicle looks a lot like the old Saturn Sky which remained in production until 2009. A renaissance of the Saturn brand could be an interesting move, albeit an unlikely one as the brand pushes Cadillac and Chevrolet towards full electrification. GM has already started its push with the GMC Hummer, so perhaps this sketch could precurse an electric coupe or sedan of the future.
