  3. Ford EV Sales Increase By Over 200%

The Mach E and Lightning are pulling serious weight.

Ford’s rebound from the semiconductor shortage continued this month. “While the global semiconductor chip shortage remains an issue for the industry, our inventory continues to turn at record rates with nearly 50 percent of our retail sales coming from previously placed orders,” said Andrew Frick, VP of Sales at Ford. That has translated directly to an increase in sales for a number of models, simply by virtue of there being more cars for Ford to sell to its customers.

Among those are its electric vehicles, which include models like the Ford F-150 Lightning, Ford Mustang Mach E, and the E-Transit van. In total, sales of Ford electric vehicles are up 222% from this time last year, a simply massive increase in sales. Ford says its sales grew almost four times faster than the overall US EV segment in May.

Part of that is down to the sales successes of the Mustang Mach E. Ford’s numbers show that the brand’s Tesla Model Y competitor posted a new monthly sales record, up 166% from last year. In total, the Blue Oval has sold 5,179 models in the month of May. Ford also says buyers are flocking to the Mach E, with it conquesting at a rate of 70% this year. As a result, Ford has moved into second place in US EV sales, just behind Tesla.

Of course, the debut of the F-150 Lightning is also pulling some weight. That truck has generated serious buzz around Ford vehicles, and it’s translating into sales. This month, Ford sold 201 Lightning trucks, an impressive figure for a truck that only just debuted. Like the Mach E, the Lightning is also bringing new customers to Ford. More than 75% of people who have reserved one are new to the Blue Oval.

Ford is still the world’s number one seller of commercial vans, a figure bolstered by the introduction of the new E-Transit. In fact, Ford sold more E-Transits than it did Lightnings this month, moving 874 units. Ford even says that the E-Transit continues to outsell the combined sales of all commercial electric vans this year.

Clearly, Ford is getting recognition for its push into the electric segment. The brand offers a diverse portfolio of EVs. Frankly, anything that we’d think needs to be electrified in Ford’s lineup is, with the exception of maybe an electric Maverick to sell alongside the gas-powered one.
