The test mule is out and about in Maranello.

An Instagrammer has spotted Ferrari’s next generation of hypercar in the Italian automaker’s home city of Maranello. Once a decade, Ferrari likes to bring something truly insane to market for its most loyal and wealthy customers. While the test mule spotted appears to be a LaFerrari Aperta, we can see its rear vents are similar to the ones that showed up on a leaked patent for a new Ferrari hypercar. We also recently saw a camouflaged LaFerrari Aperta test mule out on the road and testing at a racetrack that we believe is also a prototype of that car’s replacement.

Of course, this and the previous test mule we’ve seen could be rebooted LaFerrari models, but it seems unlikely Ferrari would be making special editions of the hypercar. We can only see the back of this one, but the one spotted in November also had a different and wide-open grille as well as new air intakes, roof, rear window, rear bumper, and third brake light. It also had a five nut pattern on the wheels rather than the LaFerrari’s center lock system. However, the last Ferrari LaFerrari, the Aperta model, went out of production in 2018.

Ferrari is overdue for a replacement hypercar for the LaFerrari, so this is likely the beginning of development for a new car. It also suggests Ferrari is going to stick with a ferocious V12 backed up by a hybrid system.

Whether the new Ferrari hypercar will have a plug-in system like the Ferrari SF90 Stradale is debatable. It will likely break the 1,000 horsepower mark as well, eclipsing the LaFerrari’s 949 hp output. We expect the new Ferrari will go up against the McLaren P1 successor that will likely come in 2024. And perhaps Porsche will surprise us with a new model and create a new hypercar trinity.
