Although one of the oldest production cars currently being sold, it remains a tuner’s dream platform.

SEMA has announced the results of what it believes are the best new cars you can buy for modification and personalization. The awards were presented to manufacturers who have created accessible platforms for aftermarket enthusiasts, and for 2022, a new electric vehicle category was added.

The Car of the Year award was given to the Dodge Challenger, which is a highly sought-after offering as the model draws to the end of its lengthy production run.

Despite its age, aftermarket companies still invest large sums into the legendary muscle car. 2022 proved a successful year for Stellantis as the Jeep Wrangler was awarded the title for the best 4×4/SUV of the year.

Ram receiving the award for the best full-size truck and the Jeep Gladiator earning the best mid-size truck are testaments to how the Stellantis arm is dedicated to aftermarket tuning. These products are a perfect platform for overlanding, mild off-roading, or outlandish street-focused builds.

The Toyota GR86 took the crown for the best Sport Compact, which is to be expected considering how far the Japanese manufacturer has gone to ensure that the product accommodates tuners of varying specialties.

The GR86 has proven to be a solid foundation for those looking to participate in drifting, track, or even drag racing at a relatively affordable cost.

The Volkswagen ID.4 was awarded the best electric vehicle of the year, which may seem odd because there have not been many modifications available for this EV apart from a few cosmetic reinventions. VW explains that the award was justified because the platform is ideal for customization and can be reapplied for varying terrains.

“Electric Vehicles are an important segment in our industry and the ID.4 is a great example of how these vehicles can be customized. We thank Volkswagen for their collaboration with the aftermarket, so manufacturers are able to bring a variety of customization options for the ID.4 to consumers,” said SEMA CEO Mike Spagnola.
