Chevrolet wants to continue the momentum with this super popular model.
Chevrolet’s smallest SUV in the United States, the Trax, has struggled in recent times. Besides being held back by its uninspiring engine and choppy ride, the newer Trailblazer starts at almost the same price and is a far more compelling vehicle overall. That’s why the 2022 Trax will no longer be on sale at the conclusion of this model year. In other regions like China and South America, Chevy sells the more modern Tracker – not to be confused with the older and more rugged Tracker that was once sold here. Unlike the USA’s Trax, South America’s Tracker has been a hit, so much so that GM is expanding production of the little crossover to Argentina from July.

GM started production of the Tracker in Brazil in 2020 and exports to Argentina began in the same year. Before that, in 2017, the company announced an investment of $300 million in its Argentina operations. This has now come to fruition with the news that the Tracker will be built at the Alvear plant in Argentina’s Santa Fe province.
In countries like Argentina and Brazil, affordable and small crossovers like the Tracker are more popular than they are in the United States. “The company’s goal is to export the new vehicle to other Latin American countries, mainly to Brazil and Columbia, where 80% of the production will be destined,” said the Argentine government, according to Reuters.

A GM spokesman highlighted the economic benefit that production of the Tracker will bring to Argentina. According to GM, the Tracker was the best-selling SUV in Brazil in March. It is offered with a choice of two turbocharged engines producing 116 or 133 horsepower, and offers technologies like a semi-autonomous parking assistant and an eight-inch infotainment screen.
Although Americans prefer their SUVs bigger and more luxurious, there is still a market for affordable small crossovers. The Kia Soul is one of the best of the breed and an example of a model that makes the current Trax sold here look outclassed. Hopefully, the Trax’s replacement will see the same level of success as its Tracker sibling.
