The refreshed BMW X4 and X3 are expected to debut later this year.

It was only last week when we were treated to a first look inside the upcoming BMW X6 facelift. This isn’t the only coupe-style SUV BMW is revamping, however. Spy shots have shown the high-performance BMW X4 M is getting a nip and tuck to prevent it from looking stale and fight off fresh competition. Mercifully, the X4 M is being spared the big grille treatment, unlike its 4 Series sibling.

Now, our spies have caught a prototype of the regular BMW X4 facelift being put through its paces during some intense cold-weather testing.

Camouflage at the front can’t hide the X4’s redesigned LED daytime running lights, which have been lifted from the updated BMW 5 Series. Slimmer headlights help modernize the X4 and the grille has also been redesigned, but it won’t be as large as the ungainly grille fitted to the new 4 Series, M3, and M4.

As development continues, we’re also expecting the X4 to feature updated bumpers with reshaped air intakes. Since the prototype was parked up, our spy photographers were able to get up close and personal with the new X4 facelift.

Close-up shots reveal the cabin will be upgraded with a fully digital instrument cluster, a larger screen for the infotainment system, and a redesigned gear shifter. It’s not clear yet if there will be any changes under the hood, but the current BMW X4 is offered with either a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six producing 335 hp and 331 hp in the base model or a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine rated at 523 hp and 553 lb-ft in the more powerful M50i.

Chances are the updated BMW X4 will debut later this year alongside its X3 sibling and go on sale for the 2022 model year, but we’ll have to wait for official confirmation from BMW.
