Audi-Powered Donkervoort Supercar Finally Arrives In America

Unless you’ve seen it in a video game, there’s a very slim chance the name Donkervoort will ring any bells. The Dutch automaker builds a sports car called the D8 GTO, which was revealed way back in 2011 but was never sold in the US. More than a decade after the D8 GTO debuted in Europe, Donkervoort finally has the green light to sell vehicles stateside. “American supercar enthusiasts can’t wait for Donkervoort cars to arrive, and there is already a surprising amount of interest in the US,” Donkervoort Automobielen Managing Director Denis Donkervoort said.

The company currently has a two-year waiting list in Europe, and anticipates similar interest here in North America. “Inquiries from the US rank second behind only Europe, despite our supercars never being sold there, so we know enthusiasts in the United States are aware of what Donkervoort delivers,” Donkervoort added.

We aren’t surprised that Donkervoort is seeing huge demand because the D8 GTO is immensely impressive. Think of it like a Caterham Seven on steroids. It’s powered by a 400-horsepower 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine borrowed from the Audi RS3, enabling it to sprint from 0-62 mph sprint in just 2.7 seconds and 0-124 mph in only 7.7 seconds. That’s Porsche 911 Turbo territory.

The D8 GTO weighs less than 1,500 pounds, meaning it can out-handle most supercars. This is a bare-bones sports car with no roof, and only the bare essentials necessary for a quick lap time.

The first car will be delivered to Naples Motorsports in Naples, Florida, with two more cars being sent to Colorado and California. “Our entry into the US took time because we needed to guarantee our partner had the same ideals of extreme customer service and customization that we demand, and we could only do this with a partner like the Bespoke Imports Group,” Donkervoort explained.

Pricing for the Individual Series starts at $240,000 before options, taxes and fees. As expected from a product with this price tag, almost every element is customizable to the customer’s tastes, including the paint, seats, transmission, and even the steering rack.
