AMG Teases The Future Of Electric Performance Cars

For many, the AMG badge conjures up imagery of V8-powered, tire-shredding executive sedans and plush sports cars. This reputation for building lairy muscle cars in disguise has won the brand many fans, playing a big part in doing away with the brand’s old-man image of years gone by. But as the industry steams toward the electric era, even AMG will have to adapt to the future.

The Affalterbach-based performance arm has given us our first glimpse of its first bespoke EV and, judging by the silhouette, it’s set to be a dramatically styled car. Speaking at the Financial Times’ Future of the Car Summit, CEO Ola Kallenius said the yet-to-be-seen concept will preview the future of performance AMG motoring. “Next week, we will show what we think the electric performance world will look like when it’s made by AMG.”

The chief executive didn’t reveal much else, adding “that’s hot off the press for you today, so stay tuned for some announcements that we will make next week. We will give you a glimpse of AMG performance as all-electric.” A teaser posted to Instagram notes the reveal will take place on May 19.

Judging by the teaser image, the styling borrows heavily from the aerodynamic Vision EQXX concept car, which recently set a world record for traveling more than 620 miles on a single charge. The influence can be seen at the rear of the concept, with a particularly appealing Kamm-tail rear end.

Similarly, the prominent rear haunches from the EQXX have been applied to the upcoming AMG, along with the bluff front end. It seems, though, that the AMG concept has an even sleeker roofline and two fewer doors than the EQXX – we can expect to see a svelte-looking coupe or, possibly, roadster.

We know AMG has been cooking up a successor to the all-electric SLS. The concept will likely showcase the brand’s new direction in terms of performance and, when it reaches production, will serve as the brand’s halo model in the electrified future.

Even though it won’t be the first electric vehicle to wear the AMG badge (the EQE, EQS, and aforementioned SLS came before), Kallenius did add that it will boast a “fully dedicated electric architecture from the ground up.” Essentially, the new model will serve as the performance arm’s range-topping car, much like the AMG-developed SLS did years ago.

Positioned beneath it will be a slew of AMG-badged EVs, which will likely draw design and engineering inspiration from the upcoming concept. We will certainly miss the V8 soundtrack afforded by creations such as the AMG GT 63, but we’re hoping AMG finds a way to bring the flair and character associated with its vehicles into the electric era. So, when can we expect a production-ready model? Sometime in 2025, says Kallenius.
