Watch out, Audi Q8.

Coupe: noun. A car with a fixed roof, two doors, and a sloping rear. That’s Oxford’s definition of the word, but as you know, automakers have twisted this meaning and applied the term to any vehicle with a sloped roof. You get the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe with four doors and now even SUVs like the Volkswagen ID.5 are being called coupes. VW is far from the first to do it, but now Genesis is jumping on the bandwagon with a coupe version of the GV80. And based on the render you see below, the likes of the Audi Q8 should worry.

According to online forum GV80 Club, the GV80 coupe is already undergoing development with the first test vehicle expected to start roaming the streets in July. It will have some stiff competition to deal with in the form of the BMW X6, Mercedes GLE coupe, and Porsche Cayenne coupe. But based on the popularity of the regular GV80, Genesis isn’t wanting for demand. And if the renders of the GV80 coupe are accurate, we think that this will be a much prettier offering than the X6 and a little more traditional than the Q8. We hope that this is the case, as we’ve warmed to the latest offerings from Asia that have proven to be just as good as, if not better than, traditional European luxury automakers’.

We’ll have to wait for official word from Genesis before we know what the GV80 coupe will be like, but it would be illogical for it to come with different engines to those in the regular SUV. Thus, we expect a base 2.5-liter turbo with 304 horsepower and possibly the Stinger GT’s 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 with 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque. Rear-wheel-drive should be the default configuration with AWD available as an option. Inside, that stunning 14.5-inch split-screen touch display should control infotainment in the new coupe. With the way that Kia, Hyundai, and Genesis have been taking the market by storm with their more traditional vehicles, we’re sure that a GV80 coupe will be wildly successful too.
