The Jeep Wrangler story started with the YJ generation in 1986.
Jeep has announced it achieved an impressive five million sales milestone for the Wrangler.
The five-millionth unit – which is a 2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Rubicon 20th Anniversary Edition – was sold to a customer from Camden, New Jersey. To commemorate the milestone, the automaker will give the owner $5,000 worth of Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) by Mopar and a lifetime of Jeep Wave customer care benefits.
“With five million Wranglers sold, the Jeep brand continues to grow, fueled by the unwavering passion of the Jeep global community,” said Jim Morrison, senior vice president and head of Jeep brand North America. “With legendary 4×4 capability, open-air-freedom, and a timeless design, the Wrangler embodies the spirit and the soul of the Jeep brand.”
Jeep first used the Wrangler name on the first-gen YJ in 1986, and it was meant to be a more luxurious offering than the Jeep CJ. The CJ in the multiple CJ models stood for civilian jeep, a lightly disguised version of the famous military vehicle. Jeep sold 630,000 YJ units between 1987 and 1995. It continued with the second-gen TJ in 1996, the third-gen JK in 2006, and the current-gen JL introduced in 2017.
Over the years, the Wrangler retained its timeless, practical design, which has become an icon today, even for non-off-road enthusiasts. According to the automaker, over 80% of the five million Wranglers are still out there.
Jeep wants to reach out to more customers with the new 2024 Wrangler, offering a revamped exterior and tech upgrades such as a new 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. The Wrangler competes in the hardcore off-road SUV market against the Ford Bronco and, soon, the new Toyota Land Cruiser.
