2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer L First Look Review: Hurricane-Powered Excess

by Karl Furlong

Jeep currently has nine different SUVs on sale based on the number of unique body styles or sizes. At the very top of this SUV food chain sits the new Grand Wagoneer L. As large as the Wagoneer L but filled to the brim with the brand’s best technologies and comfort features, it’s pretty much the polar opposite of a base Wrangler.

Competing with the Cadillac Escalade ESV, the Grand Wagoneer L boasts more cargo space behind the third row and more space in the third row. It also comes with a powerful new twin-turbo six-cylinder engine that should do a decent job of moving around a vehicle of this size. The Grand Wagoneer L isn’t an SUV that the average family needs, but in a world where excess reigns supreme, it may just be the new ultimate full-size SUV.

When Is The 2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer L Coming Out?

Revealed at the beginning of April 2022, the 2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer L’s release date is scheduled for sometime in the second half of 2022 when it will debut as a 2023 model.

2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer L Price And Competition

The 2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer L’s price hasn’t yet been confirmed in the USA but it’s guaranteed to be the most expensive Jeep you can buy. How do we know this? Well, the smaller Grand Wagoneer starts at $87,995 MSRP and a fully loaded Series III costs over $115,000. Based on that, a top-spec Grand Wagoneer L could cost around $125,000.

Competitors include the Cadillac Escalade ESV and the Lincoln Navigator L. The Cadillac has been the go-to vehicle in this segment for some time and starts at about $80,000 for the ESV. The comfortable Lincoln, meanwhile, begins at $91,145. Prior to the Jeep coming out, its pricing should be finalized.

New Jeep Grand Wagoneer L Exterior

It’s difficult to make 226.7 inches of SUV look sleek and Jeep hasn’t quite pulled it off here. Beyond the C-pillar, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer L SUV’s exterior looks bus-like and slab-sided. There is no coupe-style sloping roofline which is fantastic for practicality but doesn’t do much for the SUV’s aesthetics.

As standard, the Grand Wagoneer L rides on 20- or 22-inch alloy wheels depending on the trim. The seven-slot grille has paint-over-chrome laser-etched grille rings, and all models have a two-tone black accent roof, premium LED lighting, and power-deployable running boards. A hands-free power liftgate is standard too, and entering the front of the vast interior is a snazzy affair with courtesy “Wagoneer” puddle lamps. Although we think the Cadillac Escalade does a slightly better job of masking its size, the Grand Wagoneer L will definitely get you noticed.

For now, the full list of colors for the Jeep Grand Wagoneer L hasn’t been revealed. We recommend something dark to partially conceal its sheer size.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer L Dimensions

Parked alongside the smaller Grand Wagoneer, you’ll notice the Grand Wagoneer L’s added 12 inches of length concealing a wheelbase that has been stretched by seven inches. The Jeep Grand Wagoneer L’s dimensions are immense. It has a length of 226.7 inches, a width with the mirrors of 94 inches, a height at the roof rail of 79.6 inches, and a 130-inch wheelbase.

By some margin, the Grand Wagoneer L is Jeep’s heaviest vehicle. It starts at 6,621 pounds for the Series I. The Series II weighs 6,685 lbs and the Series III comes in with a figure of 6,704 lbs.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer L Engine And Performance

To cope with all that weight, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer L’s engine needs to have enough power. To that end, the new Hurricane 3.0-liter inline-six twin-turbo engine comes only in high-output guise in the Grand Wagoneer L. It produces a strong 510 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers are better than what the 6.4-liter naturally-aspirated V8 in the regular Grand Wagoneer can manage, and brings the Grand Wagoneer L into better contention with the Lincoln Navigator which has a twin-turbo V6. Cadillac has the option of a torquey and efficient turbodiesel, so all of these gargantuan SUVs have moved on from exclusively big V8s.

Although 0-60 times aren’t of great importance here, what is worth noting are the fuel economy estimates of 14/19/16 mpg city/highway/combined as published by Jeep. That’s 1 mpg better overall than the smaller, lighter, and less powerful Grand Wagoneer 4×4 with the 6.4-liter V8.

Paired with the Hurricane engine is an eight-speed automatic transmission and there are three available 4×4 systems: Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II. An air suspension with semi-active damping is standard on the Grand Wagoneer L. Impressively, the Grand Wagoneer L can tow up to 9,450 lbs.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer L Interior And Cargo

This could be the best interior ever crafted for an individual Jeep model. The quality is exceptional, it’s loaded with high-tech features, and the design is handsome. It is also unbelievably spacious inside. The Jeep Grand Wagoneer L’s cargo space starts at 44.2 cubic feet behind the third row. This would be a good number for many midsize SUVs with only two seating rows. With the third row folded, cargo space jumps to 88.8 cubes, and with the second row folded, a commodious 112.9 cubes are freed up.

No matter where you sit, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer L’s interior is comfortable. There is enough space in all seating positions for even taller adults, with 36.6 inches of third-row legroom and 42.7 inches of legroom in the middle row. Occupants will appreciate the Jeep Grand Wagoneer L’s seats which are upholstered in Nappa leather on the base trim. Above this, Palermo leather with quilting and a leather-wrapped instrument panel are reminders that this is no ordinary Jeep. Even better, the front seats are power-adjustable in 24 directions; even the headrests are powered.

Luxury is clearly not in short supply but neither is technology. The Uconnect 5 system comes with virtually every connectivity feature including wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, five user profiles, and an Alexa virtual assistant. It’s possible to equip the Grand Wagoneer L with up to 75 inches of screen real estate, including a 12-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch gauge cluster, and a 10.25-inch dedicated touchscreen for the front-seat passenger.

Depending on the trim, standard or optional features include a head-up display, rear-seat monitoring camera views, a 23-speaker McIntosh sound system, automated parking, night vision, and traffic sign recognition. The Grand Wagoneer L has it all.
