These engines will also no longer available for the 2022 GMC Sierra.
The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado was America’s second best-selling pickup truck last year, beating its chief rival, the 2021 Ram 1500. To retain this sales momentum, Chevrolet is giving the Silverado 1500 a facelift for the 2022 model year, which will be joined by the next-generation GMC Sierra 1500. We’re expecting the new Silverado and Sierra facelifts to feature updated styling, a more premium interior, and new technology including GM’s Super Cruise.
There will also be some significant changes under the hood, but it’s not all good news. As reported by Pickup Truck + SUV Talk, Chevrolet is removing several engine options from the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 lineup.

During the virtual 2021 Work Truck Show, Chevrolet confirmed that General Motors is ditching the naturally aspirated 4.3-liter V6 LV3 and 5.3-liter V8 L82 engine with active fuel management along with the optional six-speed automatic transmission. These units were previously available for the Silverado 1500 Work Truck, Custom and Custom Trail Boss trim levels, as well as the base-model GMC Sierra 1500.
This means the only engine and transmission option for the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado Work Truck and Custom trim and the GMC Sierra Base trim will be the more efficient 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that’s also offered for the current models and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

This unit generates 310 horsepower and 347 lb-ft of torque, making it more powerful than the old 4.3-liter V6, which is rated at 285 hp and 305 lb-ft of torque. GM also plans to use this 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit in the next-generation Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon.
Higher trims will still be available with the newer 5.3-liter V8 that features dynamic fuel management as opposed to active fuel management like the old unit, along with a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 rated at 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.0-liter turbodiesel producing 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque.
