It will still be an SUV with a sporty version available.
The original Acura ZDX was one of the first “real” crossovers. It joined the likes of the BMW X6 in the budding crossover segment more than a decade ago. However, in 2013, just a few short years after the car’s ’09 introduction, Acura binned the ZDX due to poor sales. Leaving the Acura RDX to be the only small sporty crossover, until now.
Acura announced today that the brand’s first fully-electric SUV will revive the ZDX name. On top of that, to “demonstrate its commitment to performance in the electrified era,” Acura will also launch the new ZDX with a Type S variant. Acura says the new SUV will look a lot like the Precision EV Concept we saw this morning, but told us that it is not the same as the concept. Instead, it will “translate several elements of design from it.”
Acura is co-developing the new ZDX with GM, using the brand’s flexible global EV platform. Acura has also shared that GM’s Ultium batteries will power the ZDX. However, after 2026, Acura will launch more EVs built upon its own global e:Architecture.
“The Acura ZDX represents the start to what will be an accelerated path toward electrification by the end of the decade and the key role the Acura brand will play in our company’s global goal to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050,” said Emile Korkor, Assistant Vice President of Acura National Sales. “Acura will remain focused on performance in the electrified era and Type S will continue to represent the pinnacle of this direction.”

Acura has said that the ZDX not only pays homage to the original, it also shares a home with that car. The brand opened its Acura Design Studio in Los Angeles in 2007, just a few years before the original ZDX made its debut. Now, the new ZDX will be styled in that very same studio. Again, the move is because although it may take inspiration from the Precision EV Concept, it is not the same car.

The new ZDX will fall neatly in line with Acura’s brand vision for the future and a larger strategy to hit carbon neutrality for its product and corporate activities by 2050. Part of this plan calls for 100% of Acura’s North American sales to be battery-electric and fuel cell electric by 2040. Acura has not specified when we will hear more about the new ZDX EV, but we imagine we will hear more from the brand soon.
