This video is equal parts terrifying and exhilarating.

BMW’s reputation for creating the Ultimate Driving Machine may not extend to all its models, but there’s no denying its M Performance lineup still subscribe to that ethos. The M3, for example, is a magical machine designed to put a smile on the face of the person behind the wheel. But, as we edge closer to electrification, some fear the sparkle will be dulled somewhat.

Judging by this nail-biting video, BMWs future appears to be in good hands. Renowned for being one of the world’s most dangerous roads, the Tianmen mountain pass has previously played host to both Ken Block and the Volkswagen ID.R. Conquering the meandering succession of curves is no mean feat when you’re driving a prepared racer, but one brave (and extremely skilled) driver decided to tackle the 99-corner-strong road in a road-going BMW i4.

Calm and collected as can be, the wheelman takes a deep breath before unleashing the 335 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque at his disposal. Despite being the entry-level variant, the rear-wheel-driven eDrive40 flies up the dangerous mountain pass, accompanied only by the sound of wailing, tortured rubber.

Tipping the scales at 5,000 lbs, the battery-powered Bimmer makes its way up the treacherous roadside with poise and panache, gracefully sliding from corner to corner with plenty of ease. The driver, a paragon of concentration and talent, appears unruffled by the seemingly stressful conditions.

Talented he may be, but the BMW’s cornering prowess is also to be commended. This isn’t even the performance-oriented M50 model and yet it bristles with dynamism through the bends. That low center of gravity certainly comes into play here. Sadly, no official time was given for this incredible feat.

BMWs exciting electric range is set to grow in the future, with the addition of the i7 – which will spawn a massively powerful M-Performance derivative. Alas, we recently learned an M7 is not in the cards.

The Tianmen mountain pass has also been the setting for some equally exciting automotive trials. Far heavier and less unwieldy than the i4, Panasonic Jaguar Racing driver H-Pin Tung piloted a Range Rover Sport SVR up the technical stretch of tarmac at an incredible rate of speed, wrestling the V8 behemoth up the seven-mile stretch in just 9 minutes 51 seconds.
