But these were no ordinary GTs.
The world might not currently be in the best state, but that clearly isn’t stopping the rich from spending millions on exotic sports cars and classic collectibles. The Barrett-Jackson auction house, famous for selling off some of the rarest American cars known to man, has once again proven that it is the barometer of the collectible car market after it posted a record-smashing auction during its 2022 Palm Beach Auction at the South Florida Fairgrounds this past weekend. In February we reported that Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale event brought in $195.9 million, the most in its five-decade history. While the Palm Beach edition might not have hit sales that lofty, it was no less impressive. The two top-selling cars at the 2022 Palm Beach event were two examples of the highly collectible Ford GT which both sold for over $1.4 million apiece, while several cars sold for big money in aid of charity including the first Ford Bronco Raptor for $350,000.

In second place on the overall charts was the limited-edition 2018 Ford GT ’67 Heritage Edition you see above, paying tribute to the 1967 Le Mans-winning GT40 Mark IV race car driven by Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt. It set the bar with a final bid of $1.43 million. This rare example is one of only 250 GTs produced in 2018 and features a gloss Race Red exterior with white stripes, exposed carbon package, and a set of 20-inch one-piece forged aluminum wheels. The interior features carbon fiber bucket seats with six-point harnesses, exposed matte carbon fiber door sills. Under the hood is the familiar 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 EcoBoost engine producing 645 horsepower and 550 lb-ft of torque. With only 295 miles on the odometer, this is basically a brand new car.

At $1.54 million, the 2020 Ford GT Carbon Series was the most valuable car sold at the Palm Springs event. This exclusive GT is chassis number 40 and features a Frozen White paint job, a Carbon Red graphics package, a titanium exhaust system and exposed carbon fiber wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires that hide a set of Brembo carbon ceramic brakes. The interior of this Carbon Series GT features a Carbon-exclusive Dark Energy leather interior and F1-inspired carbon fiber and Alcantara steering wheel. This 2020 Ford GT Carbon Series has a total of 242 miles on the odometer.
While the auction house did not break its previous record, a number of high profile cars fetched massive prices. Other non-charity auctions included a 2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition at $704,000 in third place, various custom Corvettes and Camaros, and even a 1962 Mercedes 190SL Convertible that fetched $324,500. Additionally, with the help of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Barrett-Jackson managed to raise $1.76 million for Ukrainian war relief efforts.
